Dear Future Knights, Reading this you're probably already interested in music, but there's another side to the band that hasn't been given as much attention as it should be. That side is Color Guard, those flag twirlers, rifle spinners that dodge instruments and that add the extra bit of OOMPH to a fall show all while having gelled down hair and perma-smiles. It may seem as though tossing a flag 10 feet into the air and catching it as it spins down back towards you is difficult, but it's not, it really isn't. As a Senior having done just one fall season, I managed to improve so much that we did tosses on both the left and right sides and even I caught them… most of the time. Even though both band and Color Guard march together it's completely different. While the band plays the piece we perform it, every note change there might be a flag spun one way, and when the music changes we might change flags. It's hard to explain but neither group can function without the other. I guess Color Guard is just those snazzy black stilettos to the cocktail dress named Marching Band, it completes the look and adds that bit of something. Lame I know… but it works, right? There's more I'd like to say BUT it's more fun to do it than read about it, so come out and try Color Guard, you might just like it. :) -Natalia Banaszczyk ‘09 Color Guard |
